Massive book sale to raise funds for New Cross Learning, the community-run library and learning centre in New Cross Gate on Sunday November 4, 2-5pm.
Paperbacks will be 5 for £1 and hardbacks £1 each. There will also be seasonal treats like parkin and tea and coffee on sale for those who want to make an afternoon of it.
“With the freezing weather coming in, what could be better than buying a few good books and curling up with them by the fire?”, asked Gillian Hart, Co-chair of New Cross Learning. “We have superb second hand books for sale – mainly fiction – and books for children as well. Every penny will go to keeping New Cross Learning open.”
The successful wholly volunteer-run learning centre New Cross Learning took over from New Cross Library, – which was closed as part of Lewisham Council’s cuts, just over a year ago, backed by the charity Bold Vision. It was recently promised a 2-year lease and building maintenance funding by Lewisham Council and is also backed by New Cross Gate Trust.
The volunteers must raise all the money needed to cover running costs.
The services that New Cross Learning provide include
- learning activities, from creative poetry workshops, to a regular knitting workshop, street dance, baby bounce, craft activities and health programmes such as healthy walks
- free computer use and wifi
- a library of books
- newspapers and quality journals
